What is Swell Magazine
Swell Magazine is a quarterly printed publication that has been carefully curated and thoughtfully designed in order to showcase the best that Newcastle and its surrounds has to offer. Locally produced, Swell aims to inspire people that live and work in the area by uncovering hidden gems and encouraging them to explore something new, while also enticing tourists to visit and providing them with all they need to know while in town.
In today’s digital age, many people still crave the tactile element that has been lost from online media. With this thought in mind, Swell has been designed to be collected, displayed on coffee tables and stored among your favourite books. Its pages will be enjoyed slowly and readers are encouraged to get lost in the words and images, time and time again.
The magazine’s main focus will be on showcasing Newcastle and Hunter-based businesses, encouraging readers to shop, dine and experience new things locally. It will uncover the stories and people behind some of Newcastle’s most loved places, as well as the ever-expanding number of new businesses popping up around the city.
Swell was created by sister-duo Kristy Coady and Rebecca Geraghty. Kristy and Rebecca have always aspired to work within the magazine industry, with Kristy even writing her thesis on magazine design while studying at the University of Newcastle.
Kristy and Rebecca own Design Bug, a local graphic design studio in the heart of Newcastle, about to enter its 11th year of business.
Since relocating to Newcastle from rural NSW to complete her design degree almost 16 years ago, Kristy’s love for the city quickly rubbed off on the rest of her family (including Bec), who soon followed suit. They can’t imagine living anywhere else.
Both are avid magazine collectors and created Swell in order to combine their passion for Newcastle with their experience as designers and content creators, while encouraging readers to slow down a little, make a cuppa and get lost in the pages.
