Celebrate National Science Week in Newcastle and surrounds

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology and is held annually in August. Featuring more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres, it’s one of Australia’s largest festivals. Here’s a round up of what’s happening in Newcastle and surrounds.

Building a life

After spending six months completely renovating a 1908 miner’s cottage in Wallsend,
Michael and Amanda Huggins needed a break
from the dust, the mess and the dilemmas
that come with modernising a housing relic.
Little did they know that their next project
would be the complete opposite – a brand spanking new build in the Lower Hunter Valley.

Crowd Surfing

Surfest

After being forced to cancel Surfest in 2021 due to Covid impacts, the iconic Newcastle
surfing competition will make its triumphant return this summer bringing with it a new wave of talent buoyed by an unshakable community spirit. Surfest coordinator, Warren Smith, talks to Swell about Surfest 2022 and the entirely crowd-funded Women’s Pro event.
