Initially I was a bit put off – because seriously, can’t we just live in peace? But when I gave it a bit more thought, I realised that this was one Gen Z rule that I was actually on board with. The crux of it? Ankle socks are out and long socks are in.

Without any conscious effort, I stopped wearing ankle socks years ago. I’ve always had a thing for cute and quirky socks, and most of my collection has tended to be of the longer variety. Finally – a trend I have accidentally been spruiking for years!
But when it comes to the latest side eyeing from our younger peers, there’s a whole set of rules associated with how to wear socks. Let’s take a deep dive.
You want people to see your socks
Don’t be shy! The aim of the game is for people to notice your socks. Let go of the need to pair your cropped pants with an ankle or invisible sock. Say goodbye to that horrendous feeling of your tiny sock being eaten by your shoe, and hello to warm ankles and comfort.
Get frilly
Remember wearing frilly socks to school in the 90s? They’re back, baby. I might be a 36 year old mother of two, but why should the kids have all the cute socks? Get me some frilly white socks pronto!
Socks over tights is absolutely encouraged
Jane Fonda, eat your heart out. If you’re heading out for a run or to your local gym, here’s your permission to tuck those tights into your socks. Embrace the weirdness, but make sure your socks are a contrasting colour to your tights. We don’t want them to match.
Where do you sit in the Great Sock Debate? Are you embracing longer socks or are you a staunch ankle sock lover? Whichever side you’re on, just please tell me you’re getting rid of your sockettes!
