Top 5 places to swim in Newcastle

Are you looking to shake up your swim routine? Trying to find a new place to cool off this summer? Simply feeling overwhelmed by choice? Here are our top five places to swim in Newcastle and surrounds.

Lambton Pool

People are often divided into two camps. Those who are afraid of heights, and those who aren’t. How to tell those two groups of people apart? Ask them how they feel about Lambton Pool and their experience on the incredibly high diving board. Lambton Pool holds a special place in the hearts of many Novocastrians, especially if you spent any amount of time in the ‘burbs growing up. You can also see the giant water slide from the road (I’m sure your kids have pointed it out many times on especially hot days). But aside from all the fun and games, it’s a great place to get some early morning laps in, or just simply have a frolic and cool off in the sunshine.

Mayfield Pool

Did someone say vintage vibes? If you’re searching for a chlorine pool to call home, but don’t want to venture too far out of town, Mayfield Swimming Centre could be your next go-to. This is a no fuss, no muss swimming experience for anyone looking for a quick dip, or a chance to shake up their regular exercise routine. If you’re looking to stay a while, take advantage of the large grassy area, built in BBQs and kiosk to really make a day of it.

The Bogey Hole

Newcastle’s worst-kept secret is still the best place to go for a dip as the weather warms up. Built by convicts eons ago, this incredible rock pool is really what being a Novocastrian is all about. The walk down the carved rock stairs is an adventure in itself sure, but with uninterrupted views of the ocean and feeling like you’re a world away, it’s definitely worth it. On calmer days that is… if the ocean is having a bad hair day, stick to the main beach.

Newcastle Baths

#unpopularopinion. Newcastle Baths are better than Merewether Baths. There’s more room to hang out, the sandy bottom of the pool just feels nicer, and there’s a classic vintage Instagram-worthy vibe that keeps locals, tourists, and celebrities alike coming back year after year. Being so close to the Newcastle Kiosk also doesn’t go astray either.

Ladies Well

If you’re searching for an excuse to get out of dodge for a while and indulge in some freshwater vibes, why not head to Ladies Well in the Barrington Tops? This perfect swimming spot is bordered by magnificent rocks and state forest and is really something that needs to be seen to be believed. Make a day of it and add some hiking while you’re at it!

The reliable all-rounder

There is a quote that says, ‘At the beach, life is different. Time doesn’t move hour to hour but mood to moment…’. Today, in amongst that moody backdrop there exists a small, concrete space that people have come to rely on. The roller door flings up day after day, and despite nature’s best efforts to thwart its idyllic setting, the people still come to… the beach kiosk.
