Meet Hannah
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Hannah! I would describe myself as a professional storyteller. My background is in all things communications, marketing and content creation. I’ve been writing for Swell since the very start and now I am lucky enough to be charged with making sure the whole world knows just how great our magazine is (aka Content and Marketing Strategist). I’m also Ben’s wife, Eden and Kit’s Mum, a mid-century furniture enthusiast, a sourdough baker and a TV/pop culture junkie.
What do you love most about Newcastle?
Like many people, I’m not from here originally (but don’t hold that against me). I grew up in country NSW (Tamworth) but moved here when I started University. After graduating I moved to New York for a bit, and then my career took me to Sydney for a number of years. When my husband and I decided to start a family, we felt a really strong urge to move back to Newcastle. It has everything that the big cities have but with the small town spirit and community mindedness that I grew up with.
Where can we find you hanging out?
We live in Mayfield and I personally feel very passionate (and perhaps a little defensive) about the area. It’s been amazing to see the way the suburb has grown and changed over the years and we’re so lucky to have lots of great options within walking distance. Some favourites include Covered in Crumbs, Perry the Feeder, Side Pocket Espresso and Pork Ewe Deli. We also have some great parks and playgrounds for the kids nearby including the recently refurbished Stevenson Park. We’re only a 10 minute drive from the beach too, so we get there as often as we can.
What are you currently reading, listening to and watching?
I don’t read nearly as often as I should anymore, but the last book I read was The Back Road by Rachel Abbott. It was a nice easy crime novel. I love a true crime podcast as much as the next person, but would also recommend one called Brain on Nature – which is about the way nature helped someone recover from a brain injury. TV-wise, I could go on for days, but some recent favourites are Ted Lasso, Maid, This Way Up and Sex Education.
Thanks, Hannah! Stay tuned for another insight into the people behind the pages of Swell, coming soon.
