Celebrate National Science Week in Newcastle and surrounds

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology and is held annually in August. Featuring more than 1000 events around Australia, including those delivered by universities, schools, research institutions, libraries, museums and science centres, it’s one of Australia’s largest festivals. Here’s a round up of what’s happening in Newcastle and surrounds.

Orangutans - A Conservation Legacy

Koala Workshop – Scats, Scratches and Screams

Learn all about the science, technologies, programs and people that help find and protect koalas. In response to community questions about the impact of the NSW Government’s Koala Strategy, Cessnock City Council is bringing together a panel of experts for a community forum at Laguna Community Hall for National Science Week.

Hunter Science Festival

Newcastle Museum, 10am - 2pm, 18 August 2024

The Hunter Innovation and Science Hub (HISH) is pleased to once again bring the Hunter Science Festival to Newcastle Museum. Member organisations of HISH will be hosting interactive displays and exhibits showcasing their work. Among the activities will be an interactive display by Hunter Water. Ever wondered what happens to your water before it gets to your tap? Or where it goes after you’ve used it? Hunter Water will have hands-on activities for our community to learn about how our water is filtered and transported through our network of pipes of pumps, and what we can all do to help take care of the network and our most precious resource – water!

HMRI Poo Palace

Newcastle Museum, 17 - 18 August 2024

As part of the Hunter Science Festival, the HMRI Poo Palace returns to Newcastle Museum this year. The HMRI Poo Palace is a giant, inflatable digestive system where kids (and adults!) voyage through each stage of the digestive journey – from tongue to toilet!

Fired Up by Fizzics Education

McIntyre Theatre, Newcastle Museum, Sunday 19 August 2024, 10.30am and 12.30pm

Explore how heat really works. From coloured flames to spectacular fire demonstrations, this fire show will keep attendees warmed up to science! Fizzics Ed will run two demonstrations at the Newcastle Museum throughout the course of Hunter Science Festival.
