Meet Kristy
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Kristy, the other half of the sister-duo who founded Swell Mag. As well as designing the pages of each issue, I guess I’m the “chief organiser.” You’ll find me brainstorming story ideas, liaising with writers, photographers and the people we feature, on location at photoshoots and attending some pretty sensational events and openings.
When not creating Swell, you will find me working as the creative director at our sister business Design Bug. Design Bug is my first baby, a branding and design agency that I started over fourteen years ago now. We have a small, tight-knit team and we love creating memorable brands for our clients.

What do you love most about Newcastle?
I love that it has a little bit of everything – a growing city with beautiful beaches (you’re more likely to find me watching on the sand rather than IN the water) – fantastic cafes, restaurants, coffee and boutiques.
Where can we find you hanging out?
Getting back to my old gymnastics roots at The Movement Collective, taking the kids on a walk or bike ride around Stockton, Newcastle or Lake Mac (going “on an adventure” as they like to call it) – and ending our outing with a delicious lunch out.
What are you currently reading, listening to and watching?
Reading – I’m currently re-reading Maggie Dent’s “Mothering our Boys” – as a Mum of two boys, I bought and read this book several years ago and have just picked it back up again to revisit some of her ideas for my very active 3 year old!
Listening – Having just come back from holidays with my family, and lots of time in the car, the kids current favourites (so what I’m listening to on repeat) are “Dance Monkey” “Stay” “I Gotta Feeling” and anything that Elsa sings on Frozen.
Watching – After hearing lots of hype, I’m currently watching “Dahmer” on Netflix. It’s a series on Amercian serial killer, Jeffrey Dahmer – it’s creepy, horrifying but a little bit addictive. I’m only up to episode 3 and not quite sure if I’ll be able to make it to the end just yet!
Thanks, Kristy! That wraps up our series on the core Swell team.
