Designing the dream

Zoe Pohlmann is the Creative Director of Your Home Designs (YHD), a boutique building design firm based in Nelson Bay, while her partner Tyson McDuff owns Fin Design & Construct. When the pair decided to combine their expertise and embark on their biggest project to date - their own dream home and work studio - it’s no surprise that the result is nothing short of spectacular. We caught up with Zoe to find out more.

The dream home in question is Organica – a two storey renovation and extension in the heart of Nelson Bay, complete with extensive ocean views from its prime north-easterly aspect. From the early planning stages, the couple used three words to capture all that they hoped to achieve in this residence – organic, resort and relaxed.

The result is a modern three-bedroom beachside dwelling plus studio office, with plenty of natural light, high-quality furnishings throughout and a clever use of different shapes, natural tones and textures.

This two-year build was supported by over two decades of experience between Zoe and Tyson. Throughout this period, the couple continued to manage their businesses full-time while living on the property.

“The project was completed in three phases, beginning with the pool, garage, and YHD studio, which were finished in six months,” explained Zoe. “The remaining work, encompassing the main dwelling, exteriors, and landscaping, took an additional 18 months.”

The top storey of the home was designed to take full advantage of the ocean views, with a large open plan kitchen, dining and living space, that opens on to a deck and outdoor entertainment area.

“The kitchen is probably my favourite part of the home, in particular the Patagonia quartzite island benchtop, Smeg ‘dolce’ appliances and walk-in pantry,” explained Zoe.

The large sliding doors and corner windows invite the outside in and welcome the coastal breeze. A limestone feature wall spans the two storeys, while a hand cut organic circle-shaped skylight allows for even more light to enter.

The master suite can also be found on the upper level so that Tyson and Zoe can take full advantage of the gorgeous ocean views after all their hard work.

The lower level is described as the kids’ domain, with two bedrooms, a bathroom, rumpus room, laundry and the pool and pool house found here. The couple designed the home with a growing family in mind and quirky details like the floor to ceiling swing chair add character and uniqueness, with everyone who visits the home wanting to give it a go.

From the outset, the couple were committed to honouring the connection to the environment and the Australian coastal lifestyle. Sourcing sustainable products and finishes was a priority, as well as maximising the home’s energy efficiency with passive design features and solar power.

“One of my “must haves” on my dream home wish list was to be walking distance to the local dog beach,” explained Zoe. “This is definitely a favourite – being able to walk down to the most beautiful beaches in just a few minutes.”

As for the Your Home Designs studio and office space – it sits atop the double garage and is separate to the main house. The studio is accessed by a spectacular spiral feature staircase, and open to the public during work hours. It features an open-plan office space, meeting area, small kitchen and bathroom, and the same high-quality finishes and neutral tones that can be found in the main residence.

Organica wasn’t the couple’s first foray into personal renovations; they’ve tackled several projects before, including one just around the corner that now operates as The Loft, Corlette, a stunning Air BnB. And that’s not all – come October, they’re set to elevate their hosting game even further with another beautiful Air BnB in Shoal Bay. With Tyson and Zoe’s combined years of industry experience and their impressive renovation track record, it’s no surprise that their forever home dazzles with a distinct style and brilliantly smart design.

“In all that we do, the Your Home Designs approach highlights the balance between functionality and aesthetic appeal,” explained Zoe. “We focus on integrating natural elements and creating spaces that harmoniously blend with both the surroundings and our clients’ desires, demonstrating a deep understanding of design and practicality.”

For now, Zoe and Tyson are enjoying the fruits of their labour, while continuing to help other families across the Hunter and Port Stephens regions create the homes they’ve always dreamed of.
