Meet Bec
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Bec, one half of the sister-duo who created this humble magazine. Along with creating each issue of Swell, I also help run the Swell website, plan out the stories for each issue, assist the team with distribution and before I went on maternity leave, I’d help out on photoshoots too.
When not working on Swell, you will find me sitting behind an iMac, designing brands and websites for our sister company Design Bug. Yes I wear a lot of hats, but that is the life of a small business owner, right?
What do you love most about Newcastle?
Coming from a small town in country NSW, I love the small community vibe that Newcastle has despite being a large regional city. I particularly love the amazing community we have made and met through Swell. It’s pretty inspiring hearing the stories of so many creative individuals who are so passionate about their businesses!
I also love the way people in Newcastle rally behind one another and support each other, and you can’t beat the fact you can find a quality coffee in pretty much every suburb of Newcastle (some of our favourites are listed here.)
Where can we find you hanging out?
At the moment – mostly at home! My son is six months old, so we spend a lot of time hanging out at home trying to catch up on sleep. I live in the beautiful area of Stockton so you will also find me out for plenty of walks or jumping on the ferry into the city to grab breakfast at Signal Box, a coffee at Mr Sister or heading down to our office on Crown Street.
What are you currently reading, listening to and watching?
Reading – ha! To be honest, it’s been a goal to get back into regular reading for a while now, but with my son Charlie keeping me up most nights, I’m mostly reading a lot of blogs on how to get your baby to sleep better!
The Picnic List on Spotify is a playlist that is on a solid rotation, along with the various business or creative podcasts my sister Kristy often sends me. I’m currently rewatching Schitts Creek and loving it even more the second time around. #MoiraRoseForever
Thanks, Bec! We’re almost there with this little series of staff profiles – stay tuned for our chat with Kristy, coming to a screen near you soon.
