A colourful guide to tiles, with Di Lorenzo

Love colour but not sure how to use it at home, especially with something permanent like tiles? Diana Di Lorenzo shares her expert advice on creating vibrant, welcoming spaces that still feel timeless.

If you love colour but feel nervous about committing to it – especially in something as permanent as tiles – you’re not alone. Colour has the power to completely transform a space, but when it comes to home design, there’s often a fear of getting it wrong. According to Diana Di Lorenzo, Director of Di Lorenzo Tiles, the key is to start small and build from there.

“Begin with items that are easy to update,” she says. “Towels, furniture, vanities, and accessories can all bring colour into a space, and can be swapped out as your tastes change.”

For tiles themselves, even a small detail can go a long way. A mosaic splashback, a colourful niche, or a beautiful stone ledge can all provide that little pop of personality without overpowering a room.

Just a dash of colour, please

The good news? The current colour trends are all about warmth and natural tones, making it easier than ever to embrace colour in a subtle, timeless way. Diana says they’re seeing more terracotta, clay, caramel, greige and sand tones coming through – colours that feel organic and earthy. These are often paired with richer hues like deep greens, warm mustards, plum and dark chocolate, bringing a sense of depth and sophistication to both kitchens and bathrooms.

For those ready to go bold, Di Lorenzo’s Mattonelle Margherita collection is pure joy. Designed by Nathalie Du Pasquier, it’s a playful, expressive range for those who aren’t afraid of colour or pattern. “It’s for people who want to have fun with their space,” Diana says. “It’s bold, vibrant and designed to make a statement.”

If you’re unsure where to begin experimenting, Diana suggests looking to the powder room. Often a space for guests, it’s a room where designers like to push boundaries and create something unexpected. Whether it’s a striking tile, an unusual colour combination, or a layered texture, powder rooms are the perfect spot for a little risk-taking.

The current colour trends are all about warmth and natural tones, making it easier than ever to embrace colour in a subtle, timeless way.

Mix, match, don’t panic

There’s also a lot to love about some of the more traditional materials being used in new ways. “Natural terracotta – everything from warm yellows to deep reds – is still surprisingly underused,” Diana says. “I’d love to see it more in residential projects, especially on bathroom walls and living area floors. It makes such a beautiful base to work from.”

When it comes to mixing tiles, whether that means different colours, shapes, or finishes, Diana’s biggest tip is to resist the urge to include everything you love in one space.

“Start with one element you’re drawn to and build from there,” she says. “There’s so much choice out there, so it’s important not to overwhelm the space. If the budget allows, working with a designer can really help bring clarity and confidence to your decisions.”

Bringing colour into your home doesn’t have to be about grand gestures. With thoughtful choices and a clear sense of what you love, even the smallest tile can make a lasting impression.
