There’s something nostalgic and a little bit magical about a book fair. The scent of paper, the rows of treasures waiting to be discovered, the sense of excitement that builds as you rummage for a hidden gem. That’s exactly the feeling the team at Betty Loves Books are recreating on Saturday 12 July, when they host their very own Book Fair at The Station, Newcastle.
“Think about how excited you used to get for your school Book Fair – we’re trying to recreate that magic,” says co-owner Katie.
From 9am, you’ll find tables out the front loaded with secondhand books, plus stationery, giftware, and all the charming little extras Betty’s is known for. The Homegrown Markets are also on site that day, so you can expect a buzzing atmosphere and plenty to explore. There’ll be giveaways, gifts with purchase, book discounts and more.
“It’s a family event,” Katie adds. “We’ll have books for every age, and there’s a good chance you’ll spot Emily or I in bookish costumes!”

This year’s event also has a special focus: supporting local charity Soul Hub, who care for vulnerable members of the community, especially through the colder months.
“We believe being part of a community means showing up for one another,” Katie says. “Soul Hub is entirely community funded – they do amazing work, and we want to help.”
All profits from secondhand book sales on the day will be donated directly to Soul Hub.
Never visited Betty’s before? You’ll find them at The Station, on the corner of Scott and Watt Streets. “We’re just across from Customs House and The Great Northern Hotel,” says Katie. “There’s a light rail stop 50 metres away, bus stops out front, and lots of nearby parking. Plus, we’re a short stroll from the beach and the foreshore – it’s the perfect excuse to make a day of it.”
Whether you’re a lifelong book lover or just in the mood for a browse and a good cause, the Betty Loves Books Book Fair promises community, connection and the kind of magic that only books can bring.
