For Newcastle-based artist Joey Davis, creativity isn’t just an outlet – it’s been a lifeline. Her vibrant works are full of colour, energy and joy, but her story began in a moment of unexpected pain: a playful collision with her beloved dog in 2019 led to a serious spinal injury and months of uncertainty.
What was first diagnosed as a bulging disc turned out to require major surgery – a spinal fusion and disc replacement – but through it all, Joey refused to let the injury define her. Instead, she leaned into her art, eventually managing a popular paint-and-sip company before starting her own unique version: Joey Davis Paint and Sip to You.
“I never advertise – it’s all word of mouth. I just love that it’s social, hands-on, and fun. I even play pass-the-parcel with handmade earrings as prizes,” says Joey.
“Art for me is always about healing. I think I’ve been quietly waiting for this moment, instead of chasing it,” says Joey.

Joey’s journey took another turn when she became the first Australian artist to collaborate with homewares brand Splosh, designing a hugely successful range called Talulah. She’s raised funds for charities like Ronald McDonald House and Got Your Back Sista, with her works fetching thousands at charity auctions.
Now, she’s preparing to open her own studio in a new boutique commercial building in Maryville – a space that will allow her to run workshops for families, teach in-person again, and paint her second mural in honour of those struggling with mental health.
“Art for me is always about healing. I think I’ve been quietly waiting for this moment, instead of chasing it,” says Joey.
With resilience, heart, and a splash of playfulness, Joey Davis is painting her own path – and lighting the way for others along the journey.
