An Australian Thanksgiving

Do you have American friends here in Aus who might be feeling a little out of place this holiday season? And not just because of the whole opposite seasons thing. This week, our friends in northern parts of the globe are celebrating Thanksgiving. But it’s not really the done thing here, right? In order to understand Thanksgiving a little better (in particular, how many turkeys should be consumed), Laura spoke to one of her favourite American friends.

The Autumn Rooms expands to Stockton

Swell Magazine’s editors, Kristy and Bec, both happen to call Stockton home. If you’re not familiar, it’s that little seaside village across the harbour from Newcastle and as the girls have been telling us for quite some time – it’s actually a super nice place to live or visit. So when they noticed a sign in the window of an empty shop announcing that Darby Street favourite The Autumn Rooms would be opening up soon, we knew we had to get the inside scoop.

How to plan your summer outfit: A left of field guide to your new lewk

Wanting to reinvent yourself this summer? You’re not alone! As we all emerge out of lockdown and step into the summer sun, this can only mean one thing. A brand – new – outfit. But where to start? How to choose? And what comes next in the fashion circle of life? Here is Laura’s (slightly unconventional) guide to picking your new summer look.

Getting sun safe and skincare savvy

When it comes to skincare, especially in the warmer months (and the fact that we live in Australia), we can be guilty of letting our eco-conscience slide. But what if we told you, you could protect your skin from harsh rays AND take care of the environment and our precious marine life? Thanks to Sacha and the team from SunButter… you can!

Q & A with Kiasmin Burrell – Swell Alumni

If you’ve ever taken a wander around Newcastle CBD, sipped a cocktail at one of your favourite local bars, or happened to drop by our (incredibly colourful) office on Crown Street, you’ll be familiar with Kiasmin Burrell. A local artist and painter, a passionate Novocastrian and a true lover of colour.
